What is the difference between regular content items, external links , and MyWire Reference Collection items?

We organize and select the best content from the world's top publishers just for you. This includes hundreds of thousands of free items, as well as our special MyWire Reference Collection. With all of this content, you can search, browse, discuss, and get updates on topics that interest you. It's top-quality content, coming from the world's top publishers.

Our content consists of:

  • free content including articles, images and video.
  • external links to articles from the world's top publishers, indicated by an external link icon . (For external links, please note that they often have a short expiration period -- as short as two weeks -- and will not be available after they expire. Because of this, some of the free features on our site are not available for externally linked articles.)
  • The MyWire Reference Collection which gives you access to hundreds of thousands of encyclopedic entries from outstanding publications, including the Oxford Companion Series and the Oxford Reference Sets. While selected entries are freely available, you can only gain access to the complete Collection by subscribing. You can access this special collection for only $4.95 per month. MyWire Reference Collection items are denoted by an icon , and require a MyWire Reference Collection subscription to view; if you are interested in a Reference Collection item but don't wish to subscribe, you can also purchase most Collection items individually. (Prices vary per item.)

What is a channel?

MyWire Channels are a great way to stay on top of the content that matters most to you. A channel is a live block of content delivering articles and images as broadly or narrowly defined by its creator. Either add an existing channel, or create your own by easily programming it to match your interests.

You can share your channels with friends, comment on channels, and add or remove channels as often as you like. All your channels can be readily accessed and organized on your "My Channels" page.

How do I save an article in my account to read again later?

Located on every article page is a set of buttons that are tools that you can use with any article. One of the buttons is labeled "Tag." Tag the article using keywords of your choice. To later access your tagged articles -- including that one -- go to the "My Tags" link on the right side. Your tags will be listed there, and you can click on the appropriate tag to find articles you've tagged with those words. Please note that the full content of an article might only be available if you have a MyWire Reference Collection subscription.

Please also note that because externally linked articles (which are indicated by an external icon ) expire quickly, this feature is not available for externally linked articles.

How do Suggested Articles work?

Registered MyWire users get to take advantage of a unique MyWire service: Suggested Articles. As you use the MyWire service, we will automatically find and display suggested articles that closely match those that you have browsed or searched for. In addition to displaying and updating these articles in the "Recommended to Me" block, we also have a weekly email of these Suggested Articles that you can opt in to receive. The patent-pending technology behind this helps ensure that you will be constantly introduced to articles that match your interests.

What are "Editor's Collections"?

Editor's Collections are sets of content chosen by MyWire editors covering various subjects we feel might be of interest to you. Our goal is to provide you with a breadth of articles, across many publications, about a particular noteworthy topic. Topics can range from current events to entertainment topics to business topics, and more.

What does it mean to "Digg this story" and how do I do it?

Digg.com is a popular social content website that is powered by a community of people who surface and share articles from all across the internet. If you find an article on MyWire that you wish to share with other people, Digg provides an excellent platform from which to do so. Simply click on "Digg this story" icon in the article toolbar. A second browser window will open that takes you to the Digg.com website. If you're already a member of Digg, you'll be prompted to answer a few quick questions so that the content can be appropriately categorized on the Digg site. If you're not already a Digg member, simply follow the easy steps to register for free and then follow the prompts to categorize the article. Simply close the Digg window when finished and return to the article on MyWire.

Please note that the Digg feature is not available for externally linked items, which are indicated with an external link icon ().

Can I print the article without the other display elements on the page?

Yes. On every article page is a series of buttons, one of which is labeled "print". Click on this button and a new window will open up containing just the text of the article and the publication title. Click the "print article" button to begin printing. When finished, close the window.

Please note that the print feature is not available for externally linked articles, which are indicated by an external icon. ()

How can I receive emails only on certain topics?

You will be most interested in our Suggested Articles feature. Suggested Articles are determined by the articles you view most or save into your account on the site. The more you use the site, the more personalized your suggested articles will be.

Why are some of the article tools grayed out or unavailable?

For externally linked articles (indicated with an external link icon ), not all of our free features are available. The features that are unavailable are: print and tag. When you view an externally linked item on our site, the icons for these will be grayed out to indicate that they are unavailable. Other features that are still available, such as commenting, will appear next to the article as usual.

The print feature is unavailable because the content of that article is not hosted on our site, so we cannot make it available to print. The other features are unavailable because externally linked items usually have a short expiration period, generally around two weeks.
