OBERSTDORF, Germany (AFP) — Helio Freitas bravely demonstrated that there's more to Brazilian sport than soccer when he donned a pair of skis to take part in the world nordic skiing championships.
The 35-year-old, who only saw snow for the first time two years ago and who trained using roller skis on the sun-kissed streets of his home near Sao Paulo, came home in second-last place from a field of 122 competitors in the 15km freestyle event.
Cheered on by 17,000 spectators, Freitas crossed the line more than 22 minutes behind gold medal winner Pietro Piller Cottrer of Italy.
