Payson Usher in 1930 and was professor of history at the Johns Hopkins University until his retirement in 1966 .
Lane's primary research interest was the economic and social history of medieval and early modern Venice. He began his career with a book on the Venetian arsenal, Venetian Ships and Shipbuilders of the Renaissance (Baltimore, 1934 ; in French, 1965 ), and he ended it with one dedicated to the history of medieval Venetian monies, Money and Banking in Medieval and Renaissance Venice,
