(1883 -- 1965 ), American economic historian.

The Harvard scholar Abbott Payson Usher will be remembered chiefly for three major monographs: The History of the Grain Trade in France, 1400–1740 (Cambridge, Mass., 1913 ); The Early History of Deposit Banking in Mediterranean Europe (Cambridge, Mass., 1943 ); and A History of Mechanical Inventions (New York and Cambridge, Mass., 1929 ; 2d rev. ed., 1954 ; republished, 1988 ).
