Payson Usher will be remembered chiefly for three major monographs: The History of the Grain Trade in France, 1400–1740 (Cambridge, Mass., 1913 ); The Early History of Deposit Banking in Mediterranean Europe (Cambridge, Mass., 1943 ); and A History of Mechanical Inventions (New York and Cambridge, Mass., 1929 ; 2d rev. ed., 1954 ; republished, 1988 ).
Usher began his scholarly career in 1905 with an article on the French Corn Laws that a few years later would lead to his book on the grain trade in France.
